Christmas According to Marx and Lenin, by Ronald Reagan

November 28, 2007

From the Liberty Counsel.

“The war against Christmas has only recently come to America, but repressive governments have banned that holy day for many years. From 1969 to 1997, Christmas was banned in Cuba. Christianity Today in 2002 reported that in the Vietnamese province of Dak Lak, children’s choirs were forbidden to sing “Silent Night.” Such examples are endless. Repressive forces have always had the same goal – to first secularize and then to eliminate Christmas.

Between his campaign against President Ford in 1975-76 and his race against Carter, Ronald Reagan delivered more than 1,000 radio broadcasts, running about three minutes apiece, writing nearly all of them himself. In one broadcast during the Christmas season, Mr. Reagan told a story about Christmas in the Ukraine before and after Communism.

The former Soviet Union eventually began banning Christmas commemorations. St. Nicholas was replaced with “Did Moroz,” or Grandfather Frost. This Stalinist creation wears a red cap and long white beard of Santa Claus, but he delivers gifts to children on New Year’s Eve. Christmas trees were also banned, but people continued to trim their New Year’s trees. Communism folded all Christmas celebrations into a New Year celebration.

In an effort to resist Christians, Communist leaders secularized a favorite Ukrainian Christmas carol, “Nova Radist Stala” (Joyous News Has Come to Us). The original song began with these words: “The joyous news has come which never was before. Over a cave above a manger a bright star has lit the world, where Jesus was born from a virgin maiden, …” At first the Communists feared an outright ban on Christmas, so they began to secularize the holiday. The first rewrite of the song began as follows: “The joyous news has come which never was before, a red star with five tails has brightly lit the world.” The second rewrite went further: “The joyous news has come which never was before. Long-awaited star of freedom lit the skies in October [the month of the Revolution]. Where formerly lived the kings and had the roots their nobles, there today with simple folks, Lenin’s glory hovers.”

Christians in the former Soviet Union exhibited bravery and courage in confronting Communism’s anti-Christmas campaign. One person recalled how the young people would go out in the streets and sing Christmas carols, knowing that if police heard them, they would be arrested. In Communist Romania, Rev. Geza Palffy, a Roman Catholic priest, delivered a sermon in 1983 protesting against the fact that December 25th had been declared a work day instead of a holiday. The next day he was arrested by secret police, beaten, imprisoned and died.

Inside and outside the Iron Curtain, Ukrainians never stopped singing: “We beg you our Lord, we pray to you today. Grant us freedom, return glory to our Mother Ukraine.” Mr. Reagan ended his broadcast: “I guess we all hope their prayer is answered.” And indeed it was.”

Valedictorian Sues School District That Forced Apology For Religious Graduation Message

August 27, 2007

From Liberty Counsel.

“Today, Liberty Counsel filed suit against Lewis Palmer School District on behalf of Erica Corder, a high school valedictorian who was forced to publicly apologize for sharing her Christian faith at graduation. Erica was one of fifteen valedictorians from the Lewis-Palmer High School class of 2006. For the past year, she has been the subject of criticism because the school continues to portray her as a student who engaged in improper conduct because she mentioned Jesus Christ during her speech.”

CNN Headline News Interviews Mathew Staver About New Jersey Threatening Church For Not Allowing Lesbian Ceremony

August 24, 2007

From Liberty Counsel.

“Tonight, Mathew Staver, Founder of Liberty Counsel and Dean of Liberty University School of Law, is scheduled to appear on CNN News live during the evening news show “Prime News”, which starts at 5 p.m. ET.

The discussion will involve an unbelievable situation with a church in New Jersey. The Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, a ministry of the United Methodist Church, owns a beachside facility used for church services, gospel concerts, Bible studies and weddings.

Two lesbian women wanted to rent the facility from the ministry for a civil union ceremony, but were turned away because church doctrine prohibits civil union ceremonies. The women complained to the state that the church was violating state anti-discrimination laws, and the state started an investigation.

If same-sex marriage continues to spread throughout the Nation, more persecution of Christians and interference with churches will also continue to spread. It’s time that people who treasure Christian values take a stand and take back America from the secularists who want to silence people of faith.

Lawsuit Causes County To Reverse Course And Allow Religious Flyers in Parks

August 1, 2007

From the Liberty Counsel.

“Yesterday, in response to a federal lawsuit filed by Liberty Counsel, officials in Orange County, Florida agreed to not prohibit Shirley Snyder from distributing religious literature in the public parks. The County also repealed the unconstitutional regulations that were used to stop Snyder from passing out tracts about Jesus and a flyer announcing a church service. The County’s agreement not to stop her from returning to the parks does not resolve the lawsuit, which will continue in federal court.”

Impact of Annual “Friend or Foe” Graduation Prayer Campaign Continues to Grow

July 18, 2007

From the Liberty Counsel.

“On May 7, 2007, Liberty Counsel announced the fifth annual “Friend or Foe” Graduation Prayer Campaign. This year, Liberty Counsel helped a high school choir in New Jersey keep the song “The Lord Bless You And Keep You,” in the school’s graduation. Students in an Arkansas high school were allowed to pray and have a youth pastor as their speaker, after Liberty Counsel intervened on their behalf. Many other issues were resolved by individuals sharing our legal memo with school administrators.

On our website www.LC.org is a detailed legal memorandum that has been used to successfully defend students’ right to have voluntary, student-initiated prayer at graduation ceremonies all across the nation.”
